I have been thinking a lot about what makes a good apprentice lately and in particular I have been working with our partners at BT to create an apprentice culture among our digital learners at Hackney UTC.

Digital Natives v Digital Immigrants

I recently saw some four year old children with some magazines. At first I thought they were reading and trying to turn the pages but what it actually transpired they were doing was trying to move the pictures in the same way I would try and move apps on an iPad or an iPhone. It was then put to me that to these youngsters a magazine is simply an ‘iPad that doesn’t work.’ Such was their confidence as Digital Natives that it really puts it into perspective how important Digital Technology and Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths are to the children of this generation and the next.

Hackney UTC - leading the way

This week has been an exciting one for the UTC movement, with announcements of a further 15 University Technical Colleges to open across the country over the next two years, specialising in a wide range of skills, including engineering, science and digital technologies.

TeenTech event at Cisco House, East London

I am delighted that six of our new student recruits are taking part in the TeenTech event at Cisco House in East London. I was there on Sunday to hear from some of the educators and employers who are running workshops.
